— Our Story —

How Cogsmith came to be

Cogsmith opened on Thanon Phuket in 2018 after the founding watchmaker spent over a decade working in horology workshops across Southeast Asia — first in Bangkok, then Singapore, before settling in Phuket where the pace suited the craft.

The name comes from a simple idea: a cog is a precise, functional part of something larger, and a smith works with their hands. Neither word carries the kind of marketing gloss that makes people suspicious. That suited the workshop's outlook well.

From the beginning, the focus has been on three services done properly rather than a long menu done hastily. Quartz care, pre-owned assessments and mechanical servicing — each handled at the same bench, with the same care, regardless of the watch's age or value.

Phuket's climate creates particular challenges for watches. Humidity, salt air and temperature variation affect seals and lubricants faster than owners often expect. A significant part of the work at Cogsmith involves helping people understand and manage those conditions through timely servicing.

Mission

To carry out watch repair work in Phuket with the same steady attention you'd want from a craftsperson working on something you value — no rush, no hidden information.

Approach

Each piece is assessed individually. Work is only begun after a clear conversation about what's needed and what it costs. Reports are written in plain language.

Values

Transparency about condition, pricing and timelines. A quiet workshop over a busy shop. Quality of outcome over speed of turnaround.

How work is carried out

Each protocol listed below applies to every watch that passes through the workshop, regardless of service type or price point.

Condition Logged on Intake

Every watch is photographed and described at the point of drop-off. The record forms the basis of our post-service comparison and client communication.

Pressure Testing on Seal Work

All quartz services and any mechanical service involving case opening conclude with a pressure test on our dedicated rig, to a defined bar rating appropriate to the watch's specifications.

Timing Bench Regulation

Mechanical services are completed with multi-position timing checks on a calibrating bench. Results are noted and shared with the owner on collection.

Secure Storage Throughout

Watches remain in a locked storage area when not actively on the bench. Nothing is left in an unsecured area at any point during servicing.

Grade-Appropriate Lubricants

Only watchmaker-grade lubricants from established suppliers are used. The correct grade for each component is applied — not a one-size approach.

Written Service Record

Clients receive a written record of work completed, parts used and timing or pressure test results. Useful for future servicing decisions and personal records.

Watch servicing in Phuket — what to know

Phuket's position as a coastal island brings particular humidity and salt-air exposure that accelerates wear on watch gaskets and lubricants. Watches used daily in this environment — particularly those worn near the sea or pool — benefit from more regular servicing intervals than the same piece would need in a drier climate.

A quartz watch typically needs its cell replaced every two to four years, but the gasket that maintains its water resistance should be inspected at each service. A fresh cell in a watch with a degraded gasket gives a false sense of security. At Cogsmith, quartz services include a pressure test as standard, not as an add-on.

Pre-owned watch buying in Thailand has grown alongside the country's broader watch culture. For buyers and sellers in Phuket, an independent condition report from a neutral party helps both sides of a private transaction proceed with confidence. The written reports produced here are straightforward documents — not marketing materials for the seller and not alarmist assessments for the buyer.

Mechanical movement servicing is the most involved work at the bench. A complete strip-down, cleaning and reassembly is not something every watchmaker offers for all calibers, particularly older or less common movements. The work is time-intensive, and the timing bench verification at the end of each service is a meaningful quality check rather than an approximate estimate.

For anyone in Phuket looking for watch servicing that communicates clearly, prices honestly and works carefully — the workshop on Thanon Phuket is straightforward to reach and welcome to drop-ins during regular hours.
